Supported independent living refers to a model of providing support and care for individuals who require assistance with everyday tasks due to a physical or mental disability.
The aim of SIL is to enable individuals to live as independently as possible, while still receiving the necessary support to maintain their health, safety and well being.
SIL provides individuals with personalised support that meets their specific needs, goals and preferences. This may include assistance with activities of daily living such as cooking, cleaning, personal care, transportation and medication management. The support may be provided in a variety of settings, including their own home, a shared living arrangement or a community residence.
SIL services provided under the NDIS are designed to be person-centred and flexible, with a focus on empowering individuals to make their own decisions about their care and support needs.
