From a humble beginning with just 12 athletes at the inaugural Paralympics in 1960, Australia has transformed into a Paralympic powerhouse.
This year, 88 of our nation’s finest will compete across 12 sports at the Paris Games, a testament to the extraordinary growth and talent within our Paralympic community.
The Paralympic movement embodies the spirit of human potential, challenging societal norms and inspiring millions. As the United Nations aptly states, these athletes “Aim to develop and maximise their potential as world-class athletes”. The term “Paralympic” itself signifies a parallel journey of excellence, with “para” meaning “alongside” or “beside”.
Australia’s Paralympic history is adorned with glory. Since 1960, our athletes have clinched an impressive 1,240 medals, including a remarkable 401 gold. As the world turns its gaze to Paris, we anticipate another chapter of triumph for our Australian Paralympic team. These extraordinary athletes are set to once again redefine the boundaries of human ability and we wish them all the very best as we cheer them on from Aussie soil.
