What is NDIS Disability Support Work?

Disability support work refers to support services that increase independence and well-being for those living with a disability. For example, assistance with showering, shopping, household chores and exercise.

You and your loved ones decide the support services you will receive based on your needs and NDIS funding. We are able to assist you to live independently, we can provide in-home care or support in the community.

Who We Help

At Myxa, our team have extensive experience working with people who have disabilities, their families and support coordinators including individuals who have ‘complex’ and specialised care needs. We believe that ‘complexity’ is misguided simplicity. Our team breaks down complex cases into their simplest form to ensure participants are well supported and care is tailored and personalised to every individual under Myxa.

We provide support to a large variety of those living with a disability, including:

  • Individuals with newly acquired disabilities
  • Individuals under Child Protection and Department of Families Fairness and Housing (DFFH)
  • Youth and adults under a Department of Human and Health (DHHS) order
  • Children at risk of relinquishment
  • Those requiring high intensity support, 2:1, 1:1, 24-hour care
  • Individuals with complex physical, mental health and behavioural support needs including those who display “high risk” behaviour

As outlined in the NDIS guidelines from the Australian government, our experienced staff can provide support in a range of areas to assist you with these daily living skills.

This could be going for a walk in your local park or participating in a team sport. Firstly, we will determine what exercise you like doing and we assist you by taking you there e.g to a yoga class, the gym or a group session.

Having a hobby can be educational, keep you active and engaged and it is a great way to meet other people. Our team support you to partake in your current hobbies or even help you find a new hobby such as dancing or photography.

We know that navigating public transport or finding someone to drive you can be difficult. Our support workers are able to support you by taking you to work, school, appointments or community activities.

At Myxa, we have a diverse team of DSWs from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and language sets. If you have a cultural or ethnicity preference, we’ll endeavour to match you with a DSW who is able to communicate with you in your chosen language.

At Myxa we are always looking for high-achieving, trustworthy and compassionate people to come and work with us. We offer career choices in a variety of support and administrative roles.

Whilst we value qualifications and previous experience highly, we also undertake to provide best practice induction and ongoing training, education and support.

At Myxa, we consider all levels of experience. We prefer our Disability Support Workers have the below qualifications and checks at a minimum to ensure that our participants receive the best care.

  • A Certificate III or IV in Disability or Relevant Field (not a requirement for all positions)
  • Valid First Aid & CPR
  • Right to Work in Australia
  • Manual Handling training
  • Working with Children Check
  • NDIS Worker Screening Clearance
  • NDIS Worker Orientation Module
  • Infection Control Training
  • Drivers License & Comprehensive Car Insurance
  • Fully vaccinated against Coronavirus
  • Medication Management
  • Food Safety Training

  1. Getting to Know You:
    We’ll start with a comprehensive assessment to understand your specific needs, preferences, and personality. This includes your level of physical support required, preferred communication style, and interests.
  2. Disability Support Worker Expertise & Compatibility:
    We have a diverse team of DSWs with a wide range of skills and experience. We’ll match you with a DSW who possesses the specific skills needed to support your individual needs. Beyond skillsets, we also consider personality compatibility and preferences. We will endeavour to match you with a Disability Support Worker who meets your age, gender, personality preferences as well as any cultural considerations. For example, are you a loyal football fan? We’ll look for a DSW who also loves the game, no promises on supporting the same club though.
  3. Regular Feedback:
    We encourage regular feedback to ensure the working relationship continues to thrive. If adjustments are needed, we’ll work with you and your DSW to find the best solution.
